Contrary to popular belief it is not unusual to find yourself unable to get a fibre connection in busy city centres. You are often more likely to be able to get a fibre connection in areas surrounding city centres.
There are a number of reasons why you may struggle to get a fibre connection, let’s take a look.
There are obvious implications with digging up busy city centre roads to install fibre cables. Engineers will be up against problems such as listed buildings, traffic and pavements. Another consideration is the age of the wires that are in the ground, they may be unable to cope with the speeds and bandwidth that fibre broadband can offer.
City Centres are also densely populated with many homes, flats and businesses often sharing a broadband line within a small area. When fibre is available, the cabinet can be so strained with connections that there simply is not room to add additional subscriptions. Another issue? Proximity to the cabinet may be too far away.
Cost. There is obviously a considerable cost associated with the installation of fibre in the city centre.
What Can I Do
There are other commercial options to consider when fibre isn’t available and some of these options come with an all important SLA.
Ethernet over Fibre to the Cabinet (EoFTTC) is provided by copper from the business premises over the short distance to the green cabinets in the street. Unlike standard broadband where the copper then continues all the way to the exchange, Ethernet over Fibre to the Cabinet traffic travels across a shared fibre optic circuit to the exchange. The extra distance doesn’t lead to ongoing degradation of performance, which allows access to up to 20Mbps symmetrical speed with the additional boost downstream making a total of 76Mbps downstream bandwidth.
This provides an Ethernet service, without the cost, whilst offering great UK wide coverage that’s more often available in residential areas. Ethernet over Fibre is ideal for both Cloud-ready Internet Access and Private Network.
Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM) is an affordable way to achieve greater, guaranteed symmetric bandwidth than is available using broadband, whilst maintaining an Ethernet handover interface.
Thanks to having identical upload and download speeds (up to 10 or 20 Mbps), EFM can support VoIP and hosted solutions.
The service is delivered using multiple standard copper telephone lines either in a bundle of 2 or 4 lines to build a single service. The technology used is SDSL rather and ADSL to provide a symmetric service. A 2 pair may run up to 10Mb and a 4 pair may run up to 20Mb depending on the length of the copper. An on-site box then ‘bonds’ these multiple SDSL services into a single Ethernet service making it easier for you, the customer.
The box will handle line failures to maintain uptime should one of the copper lines fail but it leads to a degradation of service.
Ethernet First Mile is ideal for both Cloud-ready Internet Access and Private Network internet and MPLS services. Often chosen for its speedy transfers of large data files as well as running simultaneous applications like SIP, video conferencing and real-time business applications.
